What is a green, or living roof?
A green roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane.
There are plenty of good reasons to incorporate a green roof into a new build or renovation.
Green roofs serve several purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife and decreasing stress of the people around the roof by providing a more aesthetically pleasing landscape, and helping to lower urban air temperatures.
Green roofing has the following benefits:
- Lower energy bills
- Dramatically extends the life of your waterproof membranes
- Increases biodiversity
- Insulation from noise and sound
- Improved air quality in your building
- Reduces storm water runoff
- Easy on the eye!
